Differently Abled Friendly Infrastructure & Facelift coming soon for South Delhi Markets

The South Delhi Municipal Corporation plans to spruce up eight markets under its jurisdiction. The markets disabled friendly, will have modern infrastructure, uniform signanes LED lights and car-free zones in some places. The 8 markets chosen for the revamp are Greater Kailash-1’s, Saket J Block Market, New Friends Colony Community Centre, Hauz Khas Market, Green Park B -6 block market, Punjabi Bagh Central Market, H-block Sarita Vihar and Vikaspuri’s PVR Shopping Complex. The idea is to revamp these markets accessible to everyone. Recently, SDMC commissioner directed the officials to carry out revamp work on priority basis.

The reconstruction work is expected by the end of this year. Besides levelling of the pathways and structure of ramps for the disabled, the SDMC will set trash cans of 1,100-litre capacity each to keep the places clean. The officers have also asked the shopkeepers to approve uniform signages like Janpath Market in Connaught Place. The Empowerment department has allocated Rs 2.12 crore and 1.57 crore to revamp GK-1 and New Friends Colony markets respectively barrier free. SDMC officials are expecting the funds in the next two months after which work can be developed.

The civic agency has roped in consultants to give revamp to GK-1 market, which is to be developed as market plaza with wide roads and spacious toilet complexes. We will identify market space in GK-1 market that can be turned into a car free zone. The SDMC will ensure basic infrastructure facilities in these markets. Ever since the market was handed over to the SDMC from Delhi Development Authority, no development work was here. The drains here have no proper outlet as a result the market leftovers flooded. Essential signages are also missing.

The authority soon installs signanges at all the entrance. We are expecting to complete the project by October 15. For the revamp and repair drains in Skate’s J block market , a budget estimation of Rs 65 lakh has been sent for approval. Footpaths and Ramps will be disabling friendly here. The Green park market will also get face lift. Granite wall, colorful tiles, differently able people friendly ramp sand with murals has been designed. The SDMC has developed toilet complexes in Vikaspuri PVR shopping complex and revamp of the drainage system and ramps is looming completion. The parking area has been repaired and the construction of ramps underway in Punjabi Bagh Central Market.
