To accomplish the mission of making Delhi a smarter city, the government has taken another major step. The strategies of smart city initiative includes Pan City initiative, area based development, retrofitting, redevelopment and Greenfield.
Under the Pan City initiative, the government plans to apply a minimum of one smart solution city wide. The Delhi government has decided to connect each home with optical fibre network, thus making every home accessible to various modes of digital technology.
Through optical fibre network, each home will have a broadband, cable TV and landline telephone. The government has announced that within the end of this year, East Delhi will have high wifi connectivity over 500 locations with 1000 hotspot zones. Everyone will have an access o free internet but up to predetermined limit daily.
Dialogue and Development Commission vice chairman, Ashish Khetan break the ice on this. He revealed the government has decided to lay down optic fiber, to provide internet to people at gigabit speed. Soon the limit on usage of internet per day will be disclosed in a tender as per the guidelines of TRAI. This home to fiber project will be carried out by Public Works Department. The vision of this step is to provide basic internet access to Delhites which in turn will improvise education, health power, security and public transit. The step will be implemented by Development Information Technology (DIT).
Digital connectivity is a pre-requisite for the smart city initiative.
